Rating system explained
The Elo rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players in competitive games. Unlike simple win/loss records, Elo dynamically adjusts your rating after every match based on the expected outcome.
The core principle is simple:
- Beat a stronger opponent? You gain more rating points.
- Lose to a weaker opponent? You lose more rating points.
- Win or lose against an evenly-matched player? Smaller point exchanges.
Over time, as players compete in more matches, their Elo ratings converge to accurately reflect their true skill level.
